This past weekend was the Boston Marathon. The true competitors in this race, expend a lot of time preparing to give everything they have to seek the coveted first place finish (hopefully in record time) and prize of $150,000. Nothing will do, but their best for such an historic race and world renown race.
How are we doing in running the race of faith? What will it take to gain the prize? The prize in the race of faith is far greater than any earthly trophy or monetary reward.
First, it will take a tremendous amount of focus. Undivided focus upon our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is the pacesetter. He is the course setter. As Hebrews 12:2 says,
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith”. Also, keeping in mind the goal or the destination will spur us on when the going gets tough. Colossians 3:2 urges us to “set [our] affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” Being heavenly minded will keep us mentally sharp. Secondly, an inordinate amount of discipline must be carried out. One’s restraint will be tested and the keeping of a consistent regimen will be constantly assaulted, yet “I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (1 Corinthians 9:27). The writer of Hebrews chimes in by saying in chapter 12 and verse 1, “let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us”. Curbing our appetites is essential while staying on course with good habits is of utmost necessity. Finally, it will take some good ol’ fashion grit to endure the pain of running with all we have, while facing “the elements” of this life. The “climbs” will be steep, the “way” will be fraught with obstacles, and the “air” will become irregular at times, causing breathing to become increasingly hard. We must carry on without panicking, relying on Christ’s strength to rule the day (Philippians 4:13)! Stress and strain are part and parcel to the task. Never give up as you do what is right!
